A Living Legend: Chloe Coney

Chloe Coney

Chloe Coney’s story begins in the heart of West Tampa, where her early years were shaped by community, resilience, and a determination to forge a path forward. As one of the first three students to integrate West Tampa’s schools — and later Hillsborough High School — Chloe faced prejudice head-on, but never alone. The guidance of dedicated teachers and community leaders helped light her way and instilled in her a lifelong commitment to service.

That commitment carried Chloe into a groundbreaking professional career. In 1972, she made history as the first Black female probation and parole officer in Hillsborough County — a milestone that was only the beginning. Her work brought her alongside some of Tampa’s most influential leaders, including Judge George Edgecomb and Congresswoman Kathy Castor — a testament to the trust and respect she earned through decades of impact.

Chloe Coney’s journey is more than a story of firsts. It is a story of a community that shaped her, and a woman who gave back to that community at every turn.
